Thermal coal is a type of bituminous coal which is used for power and heat generation. It is also referred to as non-coking coal, steam coal, or boiler coal. In electricity generation, thermal coal is ground to a powder and fired into a boiler to produce heat, which in turn converts water into steam that is kept at extremely high pressures and elevated temperatures throughout to enhance efficiency of the coal plant. The steam powers a turbine coupled to an alternator to rotate at high speed in a magnetic field, which generates electricity for the power grid.
